Web Exclusive: “So Said Tony Hayward”: An Eco-Political Music Video
“So Said Tony Hayward”–a somewhat satirical but basically somber piece about the BP oil spill. Given how much material BP CEO Tony Hayward freely provided as he tried to spin and manage–“Y’know, I’d like my life back”, the “relatively tiny” spill and the “very big ocean”–the satire practically wrote itself. It’s a tango, musically speaking, and has a spoken-word denouement, borrowed from Ian Angus’s piece on the Cochabamba Conference, that ends on a hopeful note.
Here is an earlier music video, from 2004, also quite political but reflecting on a different conjuncture, titled, “Do We Pull the Monster Down?”
Bill Carroll dabbles in political music video. He is the Director of the Social Justice Studies Program at the University of Victoria.
