Is socialism really the alternative?
Maybe I have been reading too much Michael Ignatieff, but I worry that socialism is a poor model. I look at pictures of state repression in China and Russia. I read about Chavez’s muzzling of dissent, and I wonder if socialism is truly a viable alternative to capitalism.
There are encouraging signs coming from South America, namely Venezuela, but I still have my reservations. Why is Chavez aligning himself with Communist states like Russia and China, when their practices seem to run counter to my understanding of socialism?
A government for the people should not be overtly repressing its own people, which appears to be common practice in Communist countries.
I’m not dismissing socialism. I’m simply questioning my blind faith in an anti-capitalist alternative.
