  • Is Capitalism Preparing to Bury Itself?

You may remember Henry — the ruthless industrialist who nonetheless refused to be hobbled by suicidal ideology when it came to doing business. He realized as his workers cranked thousands of new cars off the assembly line that none of those workers would likely ever own one, because he didn’t pay them enough. So he dramatically increased their wages.

  • Libya, the Lie

When the U.S. invaded Iraq riding a pack of lies and monstrous manipulation, the entire U.S. elite, including major news services, academics, and politicians from both “sides” of the spectrum, lined up to cheerlead and off they went to war. It was one of the most shameful chapters in the long history of shameful acts of U.S. imperial foreign policy.

  • Can the NDP thrive after Jack? And save the country?

Canadians who maintain the dream of a more equal, democratic and civilized society may no longer be reeling from the death of Jack Layton. But they are surely stuck in a kind of political limbo, trying not to think of the damage Stephen Harper can do whenever he wants, as they try to imagine how this catastrophic situation can be turned around.

  • NDP Needs to Launch a Culture War

Back in April, 2010, EKOS pollster Frank Graves got into a lot of trouble in the neo-con blogosphere for advising the Liberal Party to “invoke a culture war” on the Harper Conservatives.

  • Can the NDP Help Restore Canada’s Reputation?

Why is it that our collective social intelligence on so many critical matters falls dramatically short of our individual citizen intelligence? It is amazing that our society can function as well as it does, given that we are in a state of continuous denial about so many things we do as a society. It feels like devolution to me.

  • Libya, Canada’s Other Ugly War

NATO members, including Canada, are continuing their massive bombing campaign against Libya in a war that may just break the record for the casual breaking of international law, and lying about the motives for the war. There is no mandate to engage in “regime change” yet everyone, including the Harper government, openly admit that that is, in fact, what they are doing.

  • Preston Manning and the Vancouver riots

In trying to determine what is at the root of this mindless violence—and the almost equally mindless spectator sport of watching the violence and doing nothing—we need to examine just how it could be that so many young men’s lives are so meaningless.

  • Harper’s Goal: Create a New Irrational Reality

In observing Stephen Harper for the past 20 years, I have often been reminded of the line from Shakespeare: “The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers.” Replace lawyers with scientists, and you capture the role that the irrational plays in the politics of the prime minister.

  • The ongoing evil of asbestos exports

The ongoing fight to get this country to ban the export of the world’s deadliest industrial material has finally reached the Comedy Network and Jon Stewart’s The Daily Show. The sheer absurdity of pretending that chrysotile asbestos can be used safely caught the eye of the popular show and they recently did a five minute segment, ridiculing the industry, the mining company, and the town of Asbestos.

  • Will Libyans See Us as Saviours?

Canada is at war again but you would hardly know it from the media. We should pay attention, for our part in the Libyan “mission” is a stunning example of how easily the self-righteous West can get involved in war without considering the consequences.

Noam Chomsky, linguist and author

With the world veering from one potential catastrophe to another, in many different domains, it has never been more important to have clear, critical thinking and analysis that is not restricted by dominant ideologies. Canadian Dimension has performed that function very effectively; a contribution of unusual importance.
