Afghan war will cost taxpayers $22B

(Canwest. Sept. 18) The Afghan war is going to end up costing the Defence Department more than $22 billion, both in actual money spent on the mission and future payments to rebuild equipment and provide long-term care for veterans, a military conference heard Wednesday. The figures are contained in a yet-to-be-released study by security analyst David Perry, a former deputy director of Dalhousie University’s Centre for Foreign Policy Studies. The study will be included in an upcoming edition of the International…

Peace activists occupy Tory candidate’s office

(Peacenews. Sept. 20) Anti-war activists peacefully occupied the campaign office of federal Conservative candidate Trevor Kennerd to focus attention on the planned deportation of American Iraq war resister Jeremy Hinzman and his family to the United States. The occupation began at 10:00 AM Central Time today. Hilarious video: Canadian culture in peril

People in Quebec are really beginning to mobilize against Harper, with unions adopting the ABC campaign (Anything But Conservatives) made popular out east and the cultural community rallying against funding cuts. This latest video really takes the cake though, and no translation is required:

Call for help in Gustav’s wake

Gustav and Ike have caused the worst storm damage in Cuba’s history. As you already know, Cuba has once more suffered the fierce attack of a hurricane. This one, Gustav, is considered to be the most devastating in the last forty years. Having caused severe flooding in its early stages in eastern Cuba, it grew in strength and size in the warm Caribbean waters and, after demolishing the special municipality of the Isle of Youth with its awful force, invaded Pinar…

    CAW urgently needs democratic renewal

(Excellent piece by Joe Emersberger) Back in May the CAW (Canadian Autoworkers) ratified contracts that made concessions to the Big Three. These “externalities” can be huge. That is particularly true for financial institutions. Their task is to take risks, calculating potential costs for themselves. But they do not take into account the consequences of their losses for the economy as a whole. Hence the financial market “underprices risk” and is “systematically inefficient,” as John Eatwell…

This morning, the Brantford Police arrested two young activists from Six Nations, aged 17 and 19. The two were arrested in transit while trying to leave the campsite on Fen Ridge Court.
