Empire or Humanity? Zinn on American Imperialism
Morning all,
Here’s an excellent video narrated by Viggo Mortensen and illustarted by Mike Konopacki. The video is based on Howard Zinn, Mike Konopacki, and Paul Buhle, A People’s History of American Empire (2008).
For those of you who don’t know him, Zinn is a historian, playwright and social activist. He has been one of the leading critics of the Iraqi war and American Imperialism since the Second World War.

Poor little Howard. The world is just too complicated for him. Nations have been pushing and shoving each other around for millenia; America is among the most benign among them. Having defeated Japanese, German and Soviet fascism in the last century, and built Japanese, German and Russian democracy in the aftermath (okay the Russians have less capacity for it), she now confronts al-Quaeda, Iran and China, the world’s real imperialists. Zinn may want the U.S. out of Iraq but most Iraquis do not. There’s at least an even chance that liberal democracy will evolve in Iraq. Zinn’s ideological bias precludes insight.
