Chomsky: The Public is Now Irrelevant

Canadian journalist, filmmaker and activist Avi Lewis talks to world-renowned linguist and US foreign policy critic Noam Chomsky for Al Jazeera’s English station. Their discussion revolves around the upcoming US elections, the possibility of ‘change’ in the US electoral system and the realities of hegemonic power and imperialism in deciding US domestic and foreign policy.

  • Wow, what a fascinating discussion with Avi Lewis lobbing soft pitches at Chomsky. Why not show us Ayan Hirsi Ali’s stand-off with Lewis on his CBC program. It’s a triumph of common sense over leftist cant; and a damn fine show.

  • In response to “Blue”.  I went on You Tube and watched the interview with Ali.  What common sense are you referring to?  I heard elite dogma from Ali, but most of what she said was misleading.  It may be illegal to shoot abortion doctors today, but if the fundamentalist christians controlled the government completely (as they believe they should), then executing abortion providers would be legal.  It is just that there is some resistance left in the US today to the fundamentalists taking control.

  • Well one thing that I agree with you on Blue, is that Chomsky’s always seems to answer the same questions. Usually this is the fault of shoddy interviewer, who wants his sage advice on creating a better world or what the solution is to Iraq.

But, I respect Lewis’s journalism. I enjoy it when he strays from his social democract roots and goes a bit more radical. His film The Take was a marvelous display of the organizing capacity of workers and their fight against capital.
