The British Prime Minister is drawing up plans to expand the number of permanent members in a move that will provoke fears that the veto enjoyed by Britain could be diluted eventually. The United States, France, Russia and China also have a veto but the number of members could be doubled to include India, Germany, Japan, Brazil and one or two African nations. (Keep reading…)

And the media haven’t helped. Focusing on whether Columbia University should have invited Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to speak, the Bush administration’s drumbeat for war with Iran goes unchallenged. United Nations, General Assembly Report of the Human Rights Council

NOTE: The UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples was finally passed at a vote in the General Assembly on September 12, 2007. Canada was one of only four countries — the others being the U.S., Australia and New Zealand — that voted against it. 143 voted in favour and eleven abstained. (Keep reading…)
