Special to Canadian Dimension March 7, 2007

Not long ago, in the face of mounting opposition, George W. Bush’s government of crazed zealots announced a military “surge” in Iraq. An additional 21,000 troops were committed to today’s deepest sinkhole for American Empire, and Bush dared the Democrats to stop him. (Keep reading…)

Kyoto: a socialist plot (Duncan Cameron)

Rabble.ca February 7, 2007

Stephen Harper was right when he called the Kyoto protocol a socialist scheme. After all it is an intergovernmental agreement to make corporations reduce greenhouse gas emissions, where tardy rich countries have the option of funding emission reductions in poor countries. (Keep reading…)

Caracas, 16 December 2006 MRZINE

Was it my imagination or were there lots of sad faces at last night’s meeting at the Teresa Carrena theatre — the site of so many Bolivarian rallies and celebrations? Certainly, here was another occasion for celebration. It was a meeting to recognize the electoral triumph of Hugo Chavez on 3 December and, in particular, to acknowledge the contribution of campaign workers organized in the Comando Miranda. Le Monde Diplomatique September 2006

Juan Guerra, a lorry driver from Zulia state, knew that he looked out of place in an office in his dirty jeans and three-day beard. But he had spent a week crossing Venezuela and he would not be intimidated by a civil servant from the national assembly. He slammed his fist on the table and said: “No, we are not asking, we are demanding that the comrade deputy transmit our complaint to the citizen president.” (Keep reading…)

Jerusalem Post January 3, 2006

As an American-born Jew who grew up in an East European immigrant, Left-liberal household, I’m very happy to say that democratic socialism has become the rising tide in South America. (Keep reading…)

The Nation April 10, 2006

From my desk in the north of England, the grass seems considerably greener˜or the poppies redder˜across the water in Europe. Here in Britain political look-alikes compete frenetically for the center ground, and politicians of the radical left are sidelined by a grossly disproportionate electoral system. In contrast, Norway‚s Left Socialist Party is part of the government; Italy‚s radical Partito della Rifondazione Comunista (Communist Refoundation Party, or PRC) is a key player in L‚Unione, the coalition that could well defeat Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi in this April‚s elections; Germany‚s Linkspartei (Left Party) potentially provides a new voice on the left; France‚s historically fissiparous left united to give the EU constitution a resounding European „No!‰ Ripples from this defeat of an arrogant political elite are evident in the confident way that young people presume they can block Prime Minister Villepin‚s attempt to neoliberalize the French labor market. The Left Needs More Socialism (Ronald Aronson)

Posted on Wednesday, April 5th, 2006

from The Nation magazine, April 16,2006

It’s time to break a taboo and place the word “socialism” across the top of the page in a major American progressive magazine. Time for the left to stop repressing the side of ourselves that the right finds most objectionable. Until we thumb our noses at the Democratic pols who have been calling the shots and reassert the very ideas they say are unthinkable, we will keep stumbling around in the dark corners of American politics, wondering how we lost our souls–and how to find them again. Long-time Venezuelan activist and deputy to the Latin American Parliament Carolus Wimmer will be touring Australia in late February-early March, hosted by the Australia-Venezuela Solidarity Network. Green Left Weekly‚s Jim McIlroy and Coral Wynter interviewed Wimmer in Caracas about the challenges facing Venezuela‚s Bolivarian revolution. (Keep reading…)

Why Socialism? (Albert Einstein)

Posted on Saturday, November 19th, 2005

This essay was originally published in the first issue of Monthly Review (May 1949).

Is it advisable for one who is not an expert on economic and social issues to express views on the subject of socialism? I believe for a number of reasons that it is. (Keep reading…)
