President George W. Bush will soon host what has become an annual “Three Amigos Summit.” The leaders of Mexico, the United States, and Canada will be gathering in New Orleans on April 21 and 22. What do you suppose is on the agenda? A rational response to immigration, perhaps? A thoughtful renegotiation of the unpopular North American Free Trade Agreement? Lessons from Canada’s affordable medicines program? (Keep reading…)

Globe and Mail March, 2008

Montreal-based Secor Consulting reported last week on the incredible ease with which foreign investors can buy Canadian companies. Their detailed study of global acquisitions since 2000 confirms that Canada is selling itself off faster than any other industrial economy. A total of 12 percent of the market value of corporate Canada has been sold to foreigners so far this decade – and the pace of conquest is accelerating. (Keep reading...)

The Growing American Thirst: NAFTA, SPP, and Super-Corridors threaten our water

Janet M Eaton | Posted on Monday, October 1st, 2007

CCPA The Monitor July 2007

So it came as no surprise that, when early corporate schemes arose to allow the large-scale export of water from the Great Lakes and Newfoundland’s Lake Gismore, the Council of Canadians and other activist groups mounted campaigns which led provincial governments to ban the export of bulk water. Our Grand Ayatollah: Tom d’Aquino rules Canada’s fate. What does he want?

Does Canada, like Iran, have its very own Grand Ayatollah? Iran is technically a democracy with regular elections choosing a legislature and president. But it is well known that no major decisions get made without the express approval of the Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran, after all, is an Islamic republic and the final arbiter of the country’s direction is the supreme Islamic ruler — democracy or no democracy. (Keep reading…)

Bitter-coated jelly beans

Frances Russell | Posted on Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

Winnipeg Free Press Sep 5 2007

IMAGINE how relieved the Three Amigos were when David Ganong’s jelly beans emerged as the lead story from the conclusion of last month’s North American Summit in Montebello, Que. The real issues were much stickier: bulk water transfers from Canada to the U.S., more compulsory sharing of Canadian energy and wholesale adoption of U.S. security, health, environmental and food standards. SPP: Opposition lining up. Montebello proved ‘deep integration’ should be a big election issue.

Stephen Harper’s behaviour around the NAFTA leaders’ Security and Prosperity Partnership summit was politically reckless, and he will pay a price for it. The summit was really about the deep integration of Canada with the United States, a major concern to anyone concerned about Canada’s sovereignty, our ability to manage our borders and regulate trade and corporate behaviour.
