Hard times have befallen Canadian women’s movements. It’s a familiar refrain: from the elimination of the family allowance in 1993 and institution of the catchall Canada Health and Social Transfer two years later, to the gutting of Status of Women Canada under the aegis of federal “belt tightening,” things are a long way from where they were in the halcyon days of feminism. In this context the need to locate and fortify points of commonality within broader global women’s movements is apparent enough. Focused and scholarly without sacrificing immediacy, Solidarities Beyond Borders provides an interdisciplinary survey encompassing contributions from political scientists, sociologists, anthropologists, and geographers.
