Terrorists Target Peace Now

Leonard Fein

Independent Jewish Voices - Canada October 8,2008

Last week, a terrorist attack in Jerusalem. A pipe bomb.

But this bomb was not like the others to which we’ve, sadly, become so accustomed. This one was apparently planted by right-wing Israelis determined to silence Israel’s peace activists.

The bomb was planted at the door to the home of Peace Now supporter and renowned Professor Zeev Sternhell (winner, this year, of the Israel Prize). Flyers left near the site of the bombing read, “A prize of 1.1 million shekels is offered to anyone who kills a member of Peace Now.”

Israel’s Peace Now and its American partner, American for Peace Now (APN), have vowed not to be intimated.

I hope you will join me in standing up to terror and sending a message of solidarity to Peace Now, Israel’s largest grassroots organization.

In Israel, Peace Now’s work — from Israeli-Palestinian dialogues, to mass demonstrations, to educational workshops, to Settlement Watch (widely recognized as the most authoritative source for information on West Bank settlements) — is vitally important work.  In the United States, APN brings home the urgency of peacemaking to policy makers in Washington, to the media, to communities across our country, and to campuses.

- The flyer found near the bomb site reads: “A prize of 1.1 million shekels is offered to anyone who kills a member of Peace Now. The State of Israel has turned into our enemy. The time has come to establish a Halachic state in Judea and Samaria! It is time for the Kingdom of Judea!”

“A prize of 1.1 million shekels is offered to anyone who kills a member of Peace Now.” This was the opening line of a flyer found near the home of Peace Now activist Zeev Sternhell, who was injured by a bomb outside his home last night.

Sternhell is expected to make a full recovery. A police detail has been assigned to protect Peace Now Director General Yariv Oppenheimer, and a special task force has been formed to find the terrorists responsible. In the United States, Americans for Peace Now is taking steps to protect its representatives.

The right-wing terrorists are not targeting Peace Now by chance, Professor Galia Golan told APN today. “The settlers target Peace Now because we are the most active group in society who bring the whole [range of] settler activities to the public eye… They definitely see us as harmful to their cause,” she said.”

Intimidation and terror will not deter Peace Now.

Peace Now will continue to fight for an Israel living at peace with its neighbors. We will hold rallies, initiate public education campaigns, sponsor Israeli-Palestinian dialogue programs, and report on settlement activity.

Please stand up to terror. Help Peace Now continue its work. Make a contribution now to support the work of Peace Now and Americans for Peace Now.

Support the work of Shalom Achshav and Americans for Peace Now.
