I recently spent personal time on vacation in the upper Huesco valley to Conay ,Chollay and beyond and I drove up to the gate of the mine zone. I found the area awesomely rugged and beautiful. I also spent time with three local young people and met some family members and found the people to be honest hard working genuine and proud of there land. I also know industry and mining processes because I have worked in engineering in mutiple process industries for 35 years. Industry does not care about anything but itself and profit. I wish the chilean people all the power in the world to stop the destruction and abuse of their land by "transnationals". And to Rod Brown of Australia, you are an idiot! I think Autralia is a useless continent and useless country with useless people

It is easy for people who benefit from mine companies big salaries or those public servants who receive bribes to approve they way of doing business. Peoples rights don't count.
Other problem we have to combat is corruption in government in any country, those where the companies are based and those where there are the natural resources.
This world is a "village", we all humans have a sacred duty to preserve God creation.

In Africa and especially in Tanzania Barricks are not doing justice to us because they even make sure that the contracts are signed outside the country so that we can not be accessible to those contracts.

I can give a recent example of signing a BUNZWAGI gold mine contract with the minister for natural resources and energy in London this year June.
This is not just to us we poor people of this country, let them do justice to us,and to the Africans.

John.

Will jobs and fair pay compensate for a polluted water supply? Maybe the farmers in the Huasco Valley will be lucky enough to get jobs at Pascua Lama, and when the mine closes they'll be able to move into the already growing cities so they can pay for the clean water they have a god given right to. It isnt like Chile will recieve a cent of royalty payments from Barrick, and if they do cause any environmental damage it is going to be the citizens that are forced to pay clean up costs. Barrick has already destroyed watersheds and the surrounding ecosystems in Papua New Guinea and the United States, so why should Chile trust this corporation to act responsibly now?

Personally, I think Barrick is doing a great job upholding Canadian values at Pascua Lama, and Veladero. I have worked in both projects and can not think of a better place on the planet to build a mine. Barren, frozen otherwise absolutely useless land. No one in their right mind would ever spend any time there unless it was absolutely essencial to earn a living. Barrick is doing a great service in both Countries where decent jobs with fair pay are far and few between. The average hard working local would be a lot worse off if it were not for the insight of hard working groups like Barrick. Save the whales but leave respectable mining companies like Barrick at peace.
Your article is crap
