<description>&lt;p&gt;CAW-NDP Divorce. Please note: I put this discussion here after reading a Sam Gindin article on the CAW-NDP divorce and hitting the link for this web-site.
I want to start dialogue about the divorce. Not all of the CAW locals agree with the divorce. In fact our CAW Local 199 voted to stay with the NDP at a general membership meeting after Buzz Hargrove tried to convince our CAW Local 199 leadership to break ties with the NDP. Our leadership beleives in making change from within the NDP and although CAW Local 199 leadership may not all agree with all of the NDP's policies it didn't make sense to quit. Sam talks about a "New Party" in the future and that the NDP is not the way to go for the CAW.
At our CAW local 199 we have about 3000 members and I'm guessing perhaps only a quarter would feel that the CAW local or national speaks for them. One only needs to go to a general membership meeting to see how little CAW members care about politics.
I beleive there are a number of problems and the biggest in my mind is how to get at least 50% of our members to actually care and get involved in politics.
I also think we can change NDP policy if we try by getting more CAW people involved in the NDP riding associations and running for MP or MPP.
As far as a "New Party" goes, hey maybe Sam Gindin is on the "Correct" path for the future BUT that will not work if we can't get more people to care about their union and it's political direction.
I beleive Sam is right in saying we need more discussion and we also need all differnet peoples in the CAW to be heard.
I thank you Sam Gindin for getting me started with this topic.
What does anyone else out there think?
